Dubai Gem was founded in 1973 on a small block and was known as Dubai Nursery School and Crèche. It began with about 20 students, ranging from infants to age five.[6][7]
Dubai Gem follows the British Curriculum leading to 'O' (IGCSE) (in Grade 11), 'AS' (in Grade 12), and 'A' levels (in Grade 13). It is affiliated to the Cambridge University of the UK and is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Dubai. The language of instruction and communication is English. Arabic is mandatory from KG1 to Grade 10 and optional from Grade 11 onwards. Islamic Studies and the Quran are mandatory for Islamic students while non-Islamic students study Moral Science. Other subjects taught include Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Computers. Students are prepared for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) conducted by CIE and Edexcel.[8]
Educational & Field Trips are undertaken each term to support the learning of students.[10]
The Duke of Edinburgh Award programme is offered to students, both boys and girls, of Grade 9 onwards, preparing them for the Bronze and Silver Awards. Expeditions, trekking and camping programmes are organized which encourage team spirit, friendship, self reliance and a sense of responsibility.[10]
The environmental Awareness programme is run in collaboration with Dubai Municipality and the Emirates Environmental Group. Students are encouraged to take part in various projects including the Can Collection Campaign, Recycling Newspapers and Magazines and Clean-Up Campaigns.[10]
In November 2010, students of Dubai Gem took part in the "Whatever Floats Your Boat" competition, (entering 4 boats, by 4 teams of students in Dubai Gem) a race in which contestants race boats made out of recyclable materials. In the school division, Dubai Gem's boat made by the team "Water Dragons" was awarded the fastest boat. Best costume was awarded to "Return of the Astronuts" which was also a team from Dubai Gem. The other two teams that participated were "The WaveWizards" and the "HawkRiders". It is also worth mentioning that Dubai Gem, won 2 out of the 3 prizes in the school category. [11]
